PostSubject: Roleplaying Guidelines Roleplaying Guidelines EmptyFri Jun 11, 2010 2:34 pm

Hi There! Alright so this is the how to's when it comes to Roleplaying. For some this may be your first time roleplaying, and for others you may have been roleplaying for years. Roleplaying is quiet simple really. Roleplaying is where you and other users take on the 'role' of an invented invidual through writing. You have a variety of roleplays you can have. School, family, other worldly, or your own original roleplay. It's all welcomes here.

Roleplaying Guidelines Empty A Guide to Role Playing

Roleplaying Guidelines Icon_post_target by Zeri~Zeri on Sun Nov 01, 2009 10:33 pm

Since we don't have one yet, I might as well (as the grammar nerd that I am) post a guide! ^^
(I've always wanted to do this...)

Posting in the Role Playing boards

There is a lovely thing somewhere around here called a 5-7 line rule. With this rule, every post made by a role player (within context of the actual role play) must be at least 5-7 lines long. For example, if I were to create a role play, before it starts, one-line posts are okay, since the role play hasn't started, and usually it's just a few Q&A's, who's accepted, or just mindless chatter (please keep the latter to a minimum).
However, in the context of the role play, please do your best to make a 5-7 line wall of text.

Grammar

Then, there is the enormous problem of grammar. For this purpose, one line will be sufficient.

but then i heard a cry in the distance. "lets go guys i think it was over in that direction hurry!"

There are multiple problems with this particular line. Let's take them out one at a time.

1. The first word in a sentence, the first letter you type...CAPITALIZE! Use the Caps Lock if you have to, press SHIFT then the letter that needs to be capitalized!

2. The letter "i" used as a word to define that it is YOU speaking, but be capitalized, otherwise it isn't a word. So "i went through the forest" is incorrect. "I went through the forest." Is correct.

3. It's missing punctuation in multiple places. Can you find it? Here's a preview of everything we've covered so far:

But then I hear a cry in the distance. "Let's go guys, I think it was over in that direction. Hurry!"

Looks much better than before, ya?

Grammar is your friend, it loves you! Embrace the grammar and make it your own!

Character sheets

Code:
Name:
Age:
Gender:
Appearance:
Personality:
Biography:

Name: You should already know about these, they are the thing your character is called in the role play.

Age: Please, unless specified otherwise by the owner of the role play, keep this realistic. Nobody can be a 2000-year-old pokemon trainer.

Gender: No Hermaphrodites please.

Appearance: A description is fine, and pictures are on equal grounds. If you can describe your appearance, please do. If you don't, then pictures are just as effective.

Personality: This is who your character is, whether he or she is smart, funny, or has a particular air of authority, this is the place to write it. Normally 2-3 lines long

Biography: This is your character's history. Where did he/she come from and where are they going? What are their goals in life? Such questions may be answered in 2-3 paragraphs (5-7 lines each). Or if you're feeling lazy, 1 paragraph. Which is fine, but please try to do, at the very least, 3 paragraphs. There is a lot you should be able to say about your character, so please do.

Role Playing and You

Please be friendly and active on the boards, and to those of you who are creators of a role play, remember: The Role Play dies with it's leader, not with those who apply. It's in your hands whether the role play is a success or not, so do try your best!

Zeri, signing out~<3

We have some lovely writers out there that have contributed to the cause, so their posts will be recorded below out of thanks.

Shadow27 wrote:Also, don't forget about post quality:

He entered the room, picked up his bag and looked out of the window for the last time...

This sentence could be improved a whole lot:

He entered the particularly small room through the old wooden door, picked up his bag that was on the table and took his time to look out of the window for the last time, just to see a sea of buildings and a vast, nighttime sky...

That's better!

Masquerade wrote:That's a very good point Shadow. Look at how this sentence...

She drew her sword.
...differs from this sentence...err, paragraph ^ ^;

The captain of the Royal Knights glissaded her sword from its ornate sheathe elegantly with the meticulousness that only a master swordswoman could possibly retain. She cherished the shimmering blade, an aquamarine masterpiece glinting with oceanic radiance in the emanation of the sun. The hilt was an aureate conglomeration of intricately carved seashells. Though the tranquility of those seashells and the irresistible calm of the magnificent waves that permeated the remainder of the hilt foretold a tale of triumph and beneficence, a stygian nature underlied the ominous obsidian, devoid of vividity as the perpetual darkness of the starless sky, its expanse saturated with the lost hopes and broken dreams of those who face eternal punishment.

That second paragraph is an actual example of my role playing ability. =3

Role-Play Ideas

When it comes to role-plays they all have a backstory. A reason for being created. Here are some ideas that you can use for a role-play. Remember though, you can make your own!!! This is just ideas!
School: School roleplays are based in school. No duh right? You can have a boarding school or even a school like Warren! It's all up to you.
Family: Family role-plays are like neighborhood ones. You have the mom&dad and their kids. Friends and relatives as well!!!
Sci-Fi: Sci-fi would be like a role-play based on science fiction. Aliens, demons, etc. Most action is involved in Sci-Fi and a few other roleplays.
Novel-Based(Even T.V): A novel-based or television based roleplay is based off of a show you like or a book you like. You can have Harry Potter's roleplay, Twilight, Family Guy, and the list goes on. So if you have a favourite show/book then this is the type for you.
Fantasy: In general this is all creatures. You have vampires, shape-shifters, etc. You can have dragons and unicorns if you want. It's all up to you.
You're Own Original Idea: Have an idea of a roleplay that isn't common? Tell me VIA Private Message with a description, and I will be sure to add it on here. Thanks!!!

Roleplaying Guidelines Empty
PostSubject: Re: Roleplaying Guidelines Roleplaying Guidelines EmptyMon Jun 14, 2010 12:50 am

I hope this is right.....

For stats, as in the character's power and defenses, as well as stamina and movement, are rather easy to calculate.

It goes something like this:

Stats:
HP: 20 - The base HP you should have is 20, as it adds up with the MP cost to equal a total of 40 points. Depending on the class, points from the MP stat can be subtracted, then added to the HP stat, or vice versa. Of course, it needs to stay in multiples of 5. So a Swordsman class would have 25 or 30 HP, and 15 or 10 MP respectively. A magician class would have the opposite, of course. There are a few neutral classes, however, so you must be wary of them as well.
MP: 20 - See above.
Atk: 3 - The base Atk, Def, Int, and Spr is 3. This is to make sure that nothing goes over too much, and that everyone adds up to an even amount. There are some cases where this is ignored, but only for those rare professions. It's basically the same as HP and MP, only with 1-point intervals instead of 5-point.
Def: 3
Int: 3
Spr: 3
Movement: 2 - The base movement is ALWAYS 2. Depending on the class, it can add 1, 2, 3, and sometimes, 4. Never go above 4 for the addition, it's too high. A 4-movement class is extremely rare, and is usually associated with the flying class, although they are normally boosted by 2, not 4. Also, there are some classes that subtract movement. Like an Organist for example would have a movement boost of -2.

For other stats, like calculating Poison and Burns and such, you need to find your own percentage that you deemed as fair. For me, I use 10% for Poison and Burn. 10% Maximum Health is taken away each calculation phase, which should happen right after the player phase. It works the same with things like Regen. Find your own percentage, but make sure it isn't too powerful or too weak.

Calculating percentages of certain abilities, like...

If a character has an A-Ability that allows them to attack for 120% Atk damage, then you simply multiple 1.2 by the attack stat of that character. Same goes for intelligence. For defenses, it's rather simple. Just subtract the total number of damage from the appropriate stat, then subtract that number from the HP stat.

Say a character took 12 attack, or physical, damage. They have a defense of 4 and an HP stat of 30. You would subtract 4 from 12 first, so it's only 8 total damage to the HP stat. The character is left with 22 HP to spare. For a low-level player character, that's a lot of damage, so you want to avoid doing that if you can. Wait until they have 35 or 40 HP, or until their defenses get up.

A typical level 1 swordsman would look like this:

Stats:
HP: 25
MP: 15
Atk: 5
Def: 4
Int: 1
Spr: 2
Movement: 2 (+1 from Swordsman Class)

A level 1 enemy rat would look like this:

Stats:
HP: 20
MP: 15
Atk: 6
Def: 3
Int: 0
Spr: 2
Movement: 2 (+2 from Rat Profession)

The Swordsman should easily be able to defeat this rat, which is why the rat gets an extra bonus. A Support-Ability that, whenever the rat lands an attack on the swordsman, there is a chance that the swordsman will be subject to a negative status, sometimes poison, sometimes frailty. (Frailty prevents the swordsman from healing HP in any way). This makes the battle a bit tougher, but the Swordsman is still almost guaranteed a victory.

For weapons and armor and stuff, the basic way to go is +1 for each stat the item applies to. But that's only if you're unsure. If a class is something that leans towards a specific stat, then you can go ahead and make it +2 for that stat instead of +1 for both.

A Swordsman with a Training Sword would be this type. The sword would increase the attack of the swordsman by 2. The same goes for a magician wielding a book, only for the intelligence stat. Armor is basically the same way.

Yes, it can. It just depends on what kind of roleplay you have

This is the battlefield. It will change depending on the area or circumstances of the request. On it, you will see representations:

Player characters
are a blue letter. Each player will have their own letter designation.

Enemies are represented by a red letter. These are the things you want to target with your attacks in most cases. There may be special cases where it would be wiser to target something else, but you have to figure that out for yourself.

Neutral Characters
are represented by a green letter or number. These characters are standby characters who may help or harm the party. Interacting with them may unlock a special event or help advance the story. More often than not, they are there to help you out.

Treasure is represented by a orange letter (since yellow is hard to see on this forum), either a 'B' or a 'T'. A 'B' means that the treasure is in a bag that is easily opened. The letter 'T' means that the treasure is locked within a treasure chest and you must use a Chest Key item to unlock them. Enemies and Neutral Characters may take treasure if they please. Killing them (enemies) or perhaps asking them (neutral characters) then you can obtain the treasure.

The spaces on the battlefield are known as cells and the location of a character is represented by a coordinate. For example, the enemy 'S' is located at B5 (row B, column 5.) Thus, when you determine where you are initially going to place your character, represent it as a coordinate.

In battle, there are 3 phases: Player Phase, Neutral Phase, and Enemy Phase. It is obvious that during Player Phase, player characters take their actions, and during Neutral Phase, neutral characters take their actions, and the same applies to Enemy Phase.

Zaneko wrote:Some GMs use some addition phase such as Damage Phase, but that is up to personal taste. Also, we use Courier New font to keep thing nice and organized since all characters in Courier New have the same width.

Moving and Acting

Okay. It is the first player phase, So what do you Do? There are several possibilities:

1) Move, then Act.
2) Act, then Move.
3) Move, then Wait.
4) Act, then Wait.
5) Wait.

Move Actions: Moving is just moving your character from cell to another represented by:

[Name] moves to [Cell].

A character can only move a number of cells equal to or less than their total move rating. Moving diagonally counts as moving 2 cells and a character MAY move through other characters.

Act Actions: There are several Act Actions. Here they are:

1. Attack-
Use a basic attack against an enemy. All basic attacks do damage equal to 100% ATK and have a range of adjacent cell. This is how attacking is represented:

[Name] attacks [Target Name OR Cell]. [100% Atk] Dmg.

2. A-Ability-
Use an A-Ability move against an enemy. These have various damage ratings and ranges depending on which skill is used. However, they do consume MP most of the time. This is how it is represented:

[Name] uses [Skill] on [Target Name or Cell]. [The percentage of ATK or INT] Dmg.

MP: [Current MP (after using skill)]/[Max MP]

3. Pick up a Bag or Treasure- Pretty much self-explanatory. You must be in a cell adjacent to the Bag or Treasure Chest to pick it up or open it. This is represented by:

[Name] picks up Bag! OR [Name] opens Treasure Chest!

**Remember: All Treasure Chests are locked so you MUST use a Chest Key on them, so really it would be:

[Name] uses Chest Key! [Name] opens Treasure Chest!

4. Using Items- A character can use items if need be. All items have a range of adjacent cell so you must be in a cell next the thing you want to use an item on unless the target is yourself. This is represented by:

[Name] uses [Item] on [Target Name or Cell].

[Number of that Item after use] [Item] left!

5. Interaction- Sometimes, there will be special actions you can take. For example, there might be a switch to pull or something on a wall you wish to examine. That takes up your Act Action for the turn. It is represented by:

[Name] [Special Action] [Target Name or Cell].

For example, there is a switch on the wall.

Zero pulls the Switch.

Or there is a creepy, hovering candle nearby (lolz Shadow):

Zero blows out the Candle.

Wait Action:
If there is nothing better to do, just wait. You attack and don't feel like moving? Wait. You move but don't feel like attacking? Wait. Don't feel like doing anything? Wait. It is represented simply by:

[Name] waits.

Okay, I think that takes care of everything. Well, go ahead and show me what you've got! That explanation should have clarified everything for you~!

i know im double posting >.> but this is it.
Skill Points: These are also a vital part of this game. Skill Points are earned after completing Requests and are used to purchase abilities. A-Abilities cost 1 SP, S-Abilities cost 2 SP, and R-Abilities cost 3 SP. Also, Skill Points can be used to upgrade A-Abilities that you have already learned by increasing their damage (20% intervals), changing the range (1 cell intervals), or adding a special effect (1 effect intervals). For each alteration that you make to the ability, it will cost 1 Skill Point.
